Here’s the newest issue of my zine, Depressed Midwest. This issue features photography by Alec Ozawa, Andy Wissman, Eddy Liddy, and Marfa Capodanno.
While a bulk of the photographs were not shot in the Midwest, the subjects or photographers included in this issue hail from the region and continue their endeavors in foreign lands.
I remember when Tommy beat my ass in a game of SKATE on the mini ramp at the YMCA during skate camps as a kid. His story is by far one of the most uplifting tales in skateboarding and should give us all the motivation to try our best to make the best of ourselves.
HOEPHASE is a video by Matt King and Gene Belanger that they have posted online and can be watched in its entirety for free. The video features some great dudes and in addition to amazing skating, the whole video is edited with a unique style that sets it apart from any other skate video.
Texas Heat 2 is a new video by Tim Kozlowski and Danny Pasminski. The DVD is available for purchase online, or at select skateshops around Chicagoland.
Depressed Midwest is a project that aims to draw focus towards the skateboarding community and culture in central time, and hopefully inspire others to go skate and create things themselves.
Last year when I started this project, I knew that I wanted to create an outlet where I could share my photographs with others and continue shooting with a sense of purpose. I did not have a clear idea of exactly what I had planned to do, nor do I after 4 issues, but I knew that I wanted to continue a project that would be open for sharing not only my own work, but that of other photographers, skateboarders, and the many other creative people that skateboarding embodies.
Issue 5 of Depressed Midwest is a step closer to my goal. This issue contains photographs by some of my favorite photographers from the Midwest.
I would like to thank Kyle Seidler, Marfa Capodanno, Jake Wickersham, Lucas Madel, and Matt Gamalinda for their contributions to this issue; I would not have been able to put this together without your hardwork.
Deep Dish is a new zine from Matt Gamalinda and the website features a video filmed and edited by Mark Dunning. The whole project focuses on skateboarding from the Midwest, specifically in the Chicago area, and is shown through Gamalinda’s black and white photographs.
